Saturday December 6, 2025 | 3:45PM-4:45PM
LBC 210 McKeever
Book Presentation Abstract
This dual book presentation will feature two authors in conversation about their recent monographs on different aspects of queer media in contemporary Mexico. Dr. Llamas-Rodriguez and Dr. Tenorio will each briefly present their own book then proceed to interview each other about their work, the theoretical and conceptual connections between them, and queer media in Mexico more broadly.
Presenters
- David Tenorio (University of Pittsburgh), Queer Relajo: Feeling the Nightscapes of Mexicanidad
“Queer Relajo: Feeling the Nightscapes of Mexicanidad” by David Tenorio combines readings of film, digital media, and performance with drag autoethnography, quite literally playing with how relajo (or playfulness) structures the spaces of queer nightlife in urban contexts, to reveal how nighttime intimacy can minimize the paralyzing effects of violence and precarity in a neoliberal Mexico.
- Juan Llamas-Rodríguez (University of Pennsylvania, moderator), Y Tu Mamá También: A Queer Film Classic
“Y Tu Mamá También: A Queer Film Classic” by Juan Llamas-Rodriguez explores the New Mexican Cinema classic as a touchstone for queer and sex cinema that continues to teach us how to find queer resonances across national and international film styles and to imagine queer media as complex networks of influence and rediscovery.
